It is totally unacceptable, but sadly a fact of life that women and girls continue to be attacked and even murdered on our streets. There is rarely a week that goes by without significant press coverage of these incidents or women talking about attacks in their past. In 2020, following the murder of 16 year old schoolgirl Ellie Gould by her boyfriend, her friends organised a petition for the teaching of self-defence skills to be made compulsory on the school curriculum. We strongly believe that young people learning self defence skills is equally important, if not more so than learning how to swim: it simply saves lives. Do you really want to be scared to walk home from work or to the bus stop, go for a run or simply walk your dog? Sadly it is a fact that 95% of people are attacked by someone they know. It is almost always unexpected, but with a little knowledge of self defence, many assaults can have a very different outcome. At Inner Strength Martial Arts UK, we have been running karate classes for the last 30yrs, which include lessons in self defence. During this time, 2 of my junior students have been grabbed by men who were simply walking past them. Luckily, what we taught them helped them get away quickly and get help. We want to offer the same courses to as many people or organisations we can. Within these courses we will cover, strikes, personal space, grabs, chokes and being pinned against a wall/ floor. We teach effective and easy moves that work. Even if you learn just one technique, it would make make all the difference to you in this situation. Being fit is not an issue with these courses, so it’s open to everyone. Our instructors are very experienced. Kyoushi Shaun Lanham 6TH Dan has over 30yrs teaching experience in martial arts. From 2017 – present he has been one of the team GB coaches and has 15yrs door security experience in and around Poole and Bournemouth at all the big night clubs and events. Sensei Victoria Shurey 3rd Dan is a World Champion in fighting and has a wealth of experience in competitions all over the world. Vicky is really focused on helping with these courses as she believes everyone should be empowered with self defence skills.
